Your skin is one of the most important organs you have — helping you protect yourself from all kinds of potentially harmful compounds and toxins. Although we often moisturize our bodies, it’s our faces that tend to receive that extra level of love and care. When you want to thank your skin, apply a face mask.

When you regularly use a face mask, you’re taking the right steps towards optimal skin health. For those who apply masks on a regular basis, it simply becomes part of their routine — just as you would naturally brush your teeth or shower. There are so many benefits to face masks, so start making your own.

Why Use a Face Mask?

Face masks offer so many benefits, especially those you whip up at home. As you apply a full mask, you’re encouraging active ingredients to penetrate. Depending on the type of mask you create, you will be able to draw out impurities, eliminate dead skin cells, promote a more even tone, and even tighter pores.

This is especially true for those of you who wear makeup on a daily basis, as additives in these products block your pores and expose your skin to harmful chemicals. Whether you have sensitive or oily skin, you can create masks that fit your specific needs. With one easy-to-apply mask, you can benefit from a full facial cleanse.

Skip the Spa — Make Face Masks At Home

If you want to pamper yourself with the high cost of a spa day, get some girlfriends together and make a few masks at home. Using simple, yet effective ingredients, will help you maintain a healthier complexion. These recipes really do work — try them for yourself.

  1. Avocado Mask

Everyone loves a good bowl of guacamole, but did you know that avocados can actually boost skin health? They have the ability to moisturize, treat sunburns, reduce fine lines, and more. When you add honey, yogurt, and olive oil into the mix, you’ll benefit from a hydrating, healing mask.

All you need to do is mix 1/r a ripe avocado with equal parts olive oil, honey, and organic yogurt — typically around 1 tsp each. If your skin is dry or even sunburned, this recipe will do the trick, providing the type of nourishment your skin craves.

  1. Egg White Mask

Egg whites are packed with beneficial proteins that tighten pores and reduce the appearance of acne. The result is tighter skin with an improved texture. Although the effects may not be long-term, the benefits are most certainly noticeable short-term. If you’re in need of tighter, firmer looking skin, give this mask a whirl.

All you need to do is separate the eggs whites from the yolk, mixing it with a touch of honey. Spread this on the surface of your skin, until it has hardened — around 15 minutes or so. Then, with warm water, completely wash the mask off.

  1. Honey and Lemon Mask

Lemons are a powerful food, helping you brighten and lighten your skin. Rich in antioxidants, it’s also been shown to reduce signs of aging. The same is true for honey, as this delicious ingredient is a natural antibacterial agent which makes it ideal when treating acne.

Simply combine approximately 2 tablespoons of pure honey and 1 tsp of lemon, mixing until well combined. As you exfoliate and clean your face, you’ll also minimize the look of dark spots. Simply apply to the surface of your skin, massaging it into your face. After 15-20 minutes, rinse thoroughly.

Just like that, you can make your very own beneficial mask, reducing the appearance of fine lines, blemishes, and dry skin. Switch up ingredients and have fun with — just remember, if you have sensitive skin, patch test a small area before applying a cocktail of ingredients.
